Kirby has no issue with NIL – he just said guaranteed $ shouldn’t be the main driver behind recruiting and/or it puts too much control in the hands of boosters and agents not directly involved with the team or necessarily the best interests of that prospect/athlete. I’ve listened to Colin make essentially the same argument – arguing that guard-rails are needed, a player should earn it first, etc. So this take is weird and hypocritical

I never had "the money" when growing up and neither did my parents when they were growing up but they did have one important thing that I learned well when it came to money. the wisdom.

You had me until the Bush's. You think it's easy to fail your way up? To suck at everything and be given more opportunities? Until you're the president because the supreme court and Florida (run by Jeb) decided that it should be that way? Yeah I do.

THIS is the crossover I've been waiting my entire life for: Colin Cowherd gets on his podcast platform, looks squarely in the camera, and asks his audience "Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise?" In that story Darth Plagueis, just like Kirby Smart and Nick Saban in Colin's video, was a powerful dark lord of the sith. They all became so powerful, the only thing they are afraid of is… losing their power. Unfortunately, Darth Plagueis taught his apprentice everything he knew. Then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. In the case of Saban and Smart, the NIL came along and started paying their players money, and the coaches lost control of their little fiefdoms. Ironic, they could beat LSU, Florida, Tennessee and Auburn, but not their own players desires for financial security.

Pay every D1 college athlete. Colin loves to say it’s a multi-billion dollar business. You have people in suits who perform useless labor like Mark Emmert raking in tens of millions. The idea there isn’t enough money to pay all the players for their labor is a capitalist myth

College football makes a finite amount of money. If the athletes' piece of the pie gets bigger someone else's has to get smaller.

So he just admitted that he gave money to his kids from a young age and increased it as they got older. Literally goes with what Kirby says and if they go broke, they might not end up in the NFL and now could have set them up for failure with no more opportunities to make that much money ever again.

I don't often disagree with Colin but on this one, man I think he's so wrong I think most athletes come from average to below average earning households and when they see that money they might steer in the wrong direction because money can influence you negatively, not all of these guys come from money which those guys have a cushion with there parents wealth. I agree with smart is saying.

That’s not what Smart was saying. He said that if you grow up with meager income and get a lot more all at once, your work ethic goes away. He’s not wrong. Most college football players don’t play pro football, even the ones that get NIL agreements.

This is a stupid comparison Colin. You didn't even get what he said right. You guys are always taking these coaches out of context. If you can't even get the context right, how am I supposed to take your response seriously. Using Steph Curry is a ridiculous comparison. His comments were very smart and very accurate.

I think SS#84’s argument that Coach K. Smart only got a few hundred thousand less at UGA in year 1 replacing Coach Richt also puts that statement into perspective. Good point about Kobe & Stephen.

Yea so that's NOT the message Kirby was getting across…the MESSAGE was of we just start giving KIDS that HAVE NOT had that type of access and resources the means and resources to pretty much start doing whatever they want financially…the results will likely not NOT be positive. U give a kid that isn't even old enough to drink a fat bank account just because he decided to play football at your university…that kid will most likely start to self destruct…and there's only so much coaches and staff can do…plus these kids become TARGETS for those that want to take the money from them… scandalous women…greedy agents…shady "account and Brand" managers… there's literally NOTHING that protects these kids with all this sudden access from themselves OR financial predators…so yes…NIL is great…but there absolutely needs to be guardrails to ensure these kids can handle what they're being given responsibly. He wasn't saying they won't work as hard…programs will have to start putting out more OFF FIELD fires than worrying about the sport itself…

All the needed to pivot the NILs is education. They can show these young men how to never need a job the rest of their lives. Fixed annuities, IULs, stocks, venture capitalism etc. Rich people love telling other people what they need. Its hypocritical to say the least

Colin, you are out of touch on this topic! It's a terrible idea that college athletes get paid this amount of money. Do your time in college, get drafted, or make it on an NFL roster after you graduate. Then you get paid.

How ever you feel about it, "College" Football is the Xfiniity Series to the NFL's Cup Series. Very little "student" in the athlete- this is a Pro league & that's that & is what it is. Does it suck in a lot of ways? Yes, but can't stop the snowball rolling down the hill now, so gotta just deal with it.

Kirby gave a fairly pro NIL speech from what I heard at SEC media days. He has some concerns that he thinks could be solved with some regulations but he did not say he didn't want them to get the money.
