Among the rest of the Big Ten in rush and pass defense, where do you think Michigan State's defense will finish in those two categories?

Michigan State beat PSU, Nebraska, and Michigan by 15 total points.

Big 10 East is gonna be a beast of a division. From top-to-bottom it’s the second best division, behind the SEC West.

NOTE: SEC East could soon take that second spot if Florida and Tennessee come back

Part of winning, is the ability to cover up ur weaknesses….that's the coaches job, to coach them up.
DL will be better….tackles r verygood.
Ends will be good enough, and improved.
LBs have been upgraded….should be better in pass coverage. Possible that LB could be used as Rush Ends.
    LB room is deep too.
CBs will be improved, for experience, and new bodies. I understand that Speed is a very big man to be a CB.
As are very talented. What u dont know about, is how injuries will impact State.
They do have improved depth now. As much as I dont like the portal, it will likely save us.
Tuck, will recruit to teach his style, to 4/5 year kids.
    Top 25 or 50?
I'm a bit less optimistic then U. I'll say top 50. To some extent, the offense will carry this team, w the D coming up w a few surprises….like those interceptions.

I would call Thorne statistically impressive. He had a better sophomore season than all but…I think two MSU QBs in history. 3,240 yards with a 27-10 TD-INT ratio is damn good. A lot of those INTs were boneheaded (see those two against U of M) but that can be improved upon.

You didn't mention Darius Snow at LB. He is coming from the secondary. He is likely to see significant playing time at LB and other time in the secondary. The secondary has to be better in 2022 after finishing dead last in all of college football against the pass. It is amazing to think this team finished 11-2 with such a porous pass defense. I'll be disappointed if the pass defense isn't in the top 50 in 2022. I expect Brandon Jordan will make a difference in terms of getting more consistent pressure on the opposing QB's which in turn should help with the secondary issues.

Yes Top 25, they have a solid run D which will be even better, we have more depth upfront and in the secondary. Our DL will make up for what our secondary can’t do right now. You can move our DTs all over the Line I can see what tuck is building, it just has to come together.

I’m not even sure how sneaky this defense will be, I expect them to take a sizable step forward. I think in that front seven there are multiple NFL guys— which should make things much easier for the guys in the back end. Pretty excited to watch this unit.

You did this video for mom and dad didn't you? LOL. I don't know what additions they have, but my Buckeyes put up 49 on them in the first half last year and then sipped Gatorade the rest of the game. I think the rock, scissors, paper effect was in play last year. Ohio State kills MSU, MSU beats Michigan, Michigan beats Ohio State. Matchups mean everything. Thanks for the show Sam, God Bless!

A big reason for the corner spot being so down last season was us only having one guy during spring, that being Kaleb Gervin who didn’t make it thru last season. Rest of the guys didn’t get there till summer, and typically Scotty Hazelton runs a very complex secondary that they just couldn’t pick up on. Now that they all have had a chance to get comfortable and speed coming before spring ball will change the group completely.
What scares me is the offensive line is going thru this exact situation this year, although it’s because of injuries, not as much of a transfer arriving late but i wouldn’t be shocked if that was the weakest spot on the team next year

They faced 5 of the top 15 passing offenses last year (1 Western Kentucky, 3 OSU, 5 Purdue, 10 Miami, and 13 Maryland, not even counting 8 Pitt as their QB sat out), and most of the other teams they played were playing from behind and were therefore passing more. They still played soft, but were redzone good, and gave up more yards than points. Many of those pass heavy teams are off the schedule and replaced with run heavy teams (Minnesota, Wisconsin, Washington) where MSU is very stout in the front seven.

They played a lot of 1st year starters last year, Ronald Williams, Marqui Lowery, Charles Brantley, then Angelo Grosse and Chester Kimbrough had little game time experience before last season. All of them are back and should be better just via the added experience.

The new linebackers should also cover better than last season. With Jacoby Windmen, and Aaron Brule, replacing Crouch at LB who struggled at pass coverage. Freshmen All-American Cal Haladay is back, also with more game experience.

Overall look for the secondary to be vastly improved.

I'll be shocked if the defense isnt light years better than last season. The secondary returns the core of the unit. That sounds bad in theory. These are talented players that needed time in a new system. Ronald William's, Charles Brantley, Chester Kimbrough, Angelo Grose and Xavier Henderson will form the core of an improved unit. Look out for Ameer Speed and some strong 2022 recruits to boost this unit substantially. What will really skyrocket this defense is the presence of Brandon Jordan. I consider the hiring of Jordan to be the best coaching hire in eons. His coaching and motivational acumen will drive this pass rush to ELITE status. Count on it. Over the next few seasons look for MSU to reach Georgia or Alabama status defensively. Look for Jordan to transform many of these surplus linebackers into effective rush ends. Athletic players who may not start, being turned into pass rushing demons in critical situations. Recruiting will explode on the defen sive side of the ball. Who wouldnt want to work with a man hired to coach the greatest pass rushers in the world!? This is a very good video. I do think you're off on how good the offensive line will be. There is solid talent in the starting unit. Recruiting in this area has been very strong. Look for Brian Greene to add strength to this unit. With Horst, an emerging Spencer Brown, Nik Samac, et.al this unit will be fine. In every other position group the talent will be substantially better. Running backs, receivers, linebackers and defensive line will be stronger than last season. Depth is the reason. Will the secondary and offensive line be stronger this season? I believe they will. Look for an over on at least nine wins this season. The talent and coaching of this team is too strong not to thrive. Who will? SPARTANS WILL!

I think part of the reason the DB’s were so bad was because the 3 CBs we had that played a lot of minutes were completely new to the system and a lot of our DBs were hurt during spring practice. The pass rush will be top 5 in the nation so that will most likely carry us. Also Jacob Slade is super underrated

This defense is definitely going to be improved from last year, that's going to be obvious from the very first game. My only real worry is the secondary still. Really hoping Ameer Speed is a stud and Ronald Williams put in some work this offseason. The front 7 will be dominant. Teams will have a tough time running the ball on this defense. I'm projecting a top 70 defense with those secondary worries still. Although I think they have the potential and ceiling to be a top 20 defense this year.

Typical UofM garbage. "MSU was a horrible defense over all". Uh no, they were known for having a horrible 2ndary, but the rush defense was 15th in the country. Michigan was 27th. That's kinda how they shut down UofM, they shut down the run. That's kinda why UofM had 400 yards passing, they couldn't run.

I think MSU defense will be remarkably better in 2022. They did lose some DL But the 2ndary is improved. They have a specialist DL coach for rushing passers.

But like last year, a lot depends on new faces. If they pan out, MSU will be a very good team.
As for taking a step back at RB with K9 leaving, we'll see. Broussard looks like K9 2.0. Broussard and Berger are college-proven. And should do very well. If not great.
