I like that, same thing we did with Anthony Barr. Give Hunter the Barr compromise, see what he says.

I can't agree this is a valid analogy though. You can't say you're better than Steve because you've been away on Paternal leave for the last two months and still getting paid. You weren't on vacation you were raising your newborn baby, but still you were not working and you were still getting paid and you may not be as good as you were two months ago, and now you want a raise? Like RIGHT NOW?

Let’s just have him play for a year and if he still doesn’t want to be here next season we can trade him or work something out then… We don’t need to void part of his contract, nor should we have any interest in having him hit free agency.

It wasn’t that Hunter outplayed his contract it was that his agent undernegotiated his contract. Hunter massively overplayed his previous deal and proceeded to sign a really bad contract. I was expecting him to get $15M a year back then if not $17.5M. He chose to sign for like $13M! LOL. Why would we reward him for making a dumb decision. If Steve Jones comes in fresh off a $40 an hour job and that’s the market and he says “no, I want $15 an hour” for the next 5 years and they’re like “are you sure, we’d like to pay you $40 an hour” and he’s like no.." $15 for the next 5” and they’re like uhhh, okay… and then he injured his typing hand and there’s questions if he can even be half as productive and then a recession hits and now he’s like “ yeah I want $100 an hour now” they’d be like GTFO, we need to hire about 10 other positions with money we don’t have and you expect us to fire the CEO to find the money? NOW??! LOL, nope. You don’t have to come into work but you won’t get paid. It’s your call. Or find a company that will give us at least 2 elite selections at replacement positions and then we can consider it.

Yeah that is not a compromise. Losing all your leverage and letting him walk for a compensatory pick favors him 100% even if I agree he deserves to be paid, this still is a business. Not to mention players have less ability to hold out now and 3 years on that deal still. You either sign him to a new long term deal back loaded or trade him for a boatload of assets, not a 1 year deal and comp pick 2 years after. That is too short term focused. If you can't lock him down for the next 4+ years in a deal, then you need a high first or multiple firsts and some change to get some potential players who will be on team friendly deals for 4-5 years if you don't want to pony up. I get it you want to maintain face with FAs and players, but you also can't make boneheaded decisions either, hence the reason we traded diggs for a bunch of assets when he was unhappy.

Love that idea. Have them come to Danielle and be like "look we want to pay you more but we simply can't afford it right now. So hear us out we'll neglect the last two years, keep you on for one year, see if you can truly bounce back and be better than you we're before. If you do bounce back than we'll talk more money next year or you can be a free agent!"

This is the problem in America, players not honoring contracts that they signed and of their free will. In 2017 D. HUNTER must have thought his contract was fine or he wouldn't have signed it. As a longtime Vikings fan, trade Hunter and use the money saved to address the offensive line and wide receiver.

For me I would rather trade him now and get something than let him walk after this next season and get nothing.

Also I believe Hunter should get paid and Cousins should not have. Hunter has lived up to and exceeded the expectations of his contract. Where as Cousins has been meh.

Because of Cousins greed this team is losing guys maybe not this coming season but 2022 and not being able to bring in quality FA because of his contract.

    My 2 cents.

Normally love your takes but not this one! Making him a UFA after this year virtually guarantees he’s gone after this year. Just give him a $5m bonus now as a good faith gesture and work out a new deal when his health is proven

Simple, game bonus checks if he's suited up ready to play, and off the injury list. No increased pay, when we don't even know if his neck has healed and he will be able to play. His career may already be over, he could just be looking to get as much as he can before the doctors let us know he won't be able to play. Seems to me something like that happened recently to another D-lineman with the Vikes not too long ago. We were waiting on him week to week last year until he went on IR. For all we know, he'll be on this year's IR too.
